Picea on omistettu Eriikka maalismaalle (1980-2024), joka oli rakastettu suomalainen viulisti ja merkittävä taidepoliittinen keskustelija. Eriikka maalismaa esiintyi Hiljaisuus-festivaalilla vuonna 2019 ja toimi Taiteilijayhdistys Hiljaisuus ry:n hallituksessa vuonna 2024.| Picea is dedicated to Eriikka Maalismaa (1980–2024), a beloved Finnish violinist and an influential voice in cultural policy. Maalismaa performed at silence Festival in 2019 and served on the board of the Hiljaisuus Artists’ Association in 2024.

Uutta luovan ja kokeellisen musiikin rohkea suunnannäyttäjä, saksalais-brittiläinen Marie Schreer tuo konserttiinsa kaksi uudenlaista viuluteosta: Aaron Holloway-Nahumilta (Iso-Britannia) ja Lauri Supposelta (Suomi). Kumpikin teos koettelee viulun ja viulun soittamisen perinteisiä rajoja.
Lauri Supposen sooloteos Picea (2021) on sävelletty hiljattain edesmenneelle viulistille Eriikka Maalismaalle. Teemoina viulun materiaalin alkuperä, viulunrakennus, viulistin henkilökohtainen suhde soittimeensa jne. Teoksessa keskeisen roolin saa esiintyjän asu, jonka on suunnitellut Kaisamaija Uljas.

A leading voice in new and experimental music, German-British violinist Marie Schreer presents two recent works that interrogate and extend the conventions of the violin as instrument and medium. Compositions by Aaron Holloway-Nahum (UK) and Lauri Supponen (Finland) both challenge established modes of violin performance, expanding its sonic, physical, and conceptual parameters.
Lauri Supponen’s Picea (2021), composed for the late violinist Eriikka Maalismaa, engages with questions surrounding the material and cultural origins of the violin. The work reflects on the instrument’s organic beginnings, the processes of violin making, and the performer’s embodied relationship to their instrument. A significant performative layer is introduced through the costume, designed by Kaisamaija Uljas, which functions as an integral extension of the work’s material and visual dramaturgy.
Aaron Holloway-Nahum’s solo work similarly centres on the notion of origin, here shifting the focus from instrument to human subject. The piece explores ideas of place, belonging, and identity, situating the performer within broader reflections on where we come from and how such origins are constructed and experienced.
